Het duuurt nog even, maar in 2012 organiseert Londen de Olympische Spelen. En dat betekent dat we niet meer vrij zijn in ons taalgebruik. Want volgens het 'Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Limited' (L2012) krijgen we een rechtszaak aan de broek, wanneer we, zonder toestemming van de L2012, woorden van lijstje A of/en lijstje B gebruiken in combinatie met onze zaken, goederen of diensten. Daar hebben ze zelfs een wet voor gemaakt. Zie onderstaande verklaring.

Wat ik zo op-en-top keurig Brits vind, en een prachtig voorbeeld van ingehouden understatement, zijn de laatste regels van deze verklaring. "Als u denkt dat u misschien inbreuk hebt gemaakt op de rechten van L2012, of als u overweegt om iets te doen waarvan u meent dat het inbreuk maakt op de rechten van L2012, bevelen we u aan onafhankelijk juridisch advies in te winnen."

Mooi, die onderkoelde Britse wijze van formuleren.

Protected by the London Olympic Games and Paralympics Games Act 2006
The 'London Olympic Games and Paralympics Games Act 2006' (the 2006 Act) grants to L2012 the London Olympic Association Right. It allows L2012 to prevent people, without its authority, from creating an association between a business, goods or services and the London 2012 Olympic Games and/or Paralympics Games, including by use of the Listed Expressions.
The Listed Expressions are:
• any two of the words in list A below
OR
• any word in list A with one or more words in list B below
A: ‘Games’, ‘Two Thousand and Twelve’, ‘2012’, ‘twenty twelve’
B: ‘London’, ‘medals’, ‘sponsor’, ‘summer’, ‘Gold’, 'Silver’, ‘Bronze’
Whether an association has been created with London 2012, or not, will be a question of fact. The 2006 Act specifies the Listed Expressions, and states that a court may take them into particular account when determining if there has been an infringement of L2012’s rights. But an association can be created by the use of any representation, which may be in any audio or visual form.
